History

Harris County was originally settled in 1824 and named after an early settler, John Richardson Harris. The Battle of San Jacinto took place in Harrisburg in 1836, the same year Harrisburg County was established. In 1839 the name was changed to Harris County.

The city of Houston was named for former General Sam Houston, the commander of the Battle of San Jacinto. Houston's port is the second busiest in the country. Harris County is the third largest county in the U.S., and Houston is the fourth largest city in the U.S.. NASA is located in Harris County and all space flights are controlled from Johnson Space Center.
